Science Serving Maryland's Coasts

Lessons Using the 5E Instructional Model

Maryland Sea Grant has supported the development of a range of lesson plans on coastal, marine, and environmental science.

The lesson plans presented below are based on the 5E Instructional Model, which emphasize inquiry, critical thinking, and the process of science. The plans were written by schoolteachers on fellowships to improve their instructional skills in this area.

You can benefit from their experience and enrich your own teaching. You can use these resources to encourage your students to undertake research projects and to learn about current research in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Some lesson plans incorporate field components to expand students' investigations beyond classroom walls.

Each lesson plan provides these categories of information: Objectives, Lesson Materials, Procedures, References, and State Standard Indicators.
